Five steps to get your garden in top shape for Spring

IT'S almost spring - and with the weather improving Brits will start to spend more time in the garden.
Everyone wants to have the perfect garden by the time summer comes around, and these tips will help yours flourish.
CLEAR THE WAY
After winter your garden could be littered with fallen leaves and twigs from blustery winds.
Before spring comes and you get mowing - the first thing you need to do is rake.
This will also get rid of any dead grass and clear the way for new growth.

IMPROVE AERATION
Making small holes creates pockets in the grass will allow water to trickle down and nourish the soil.
Use a garden fork to prick holes around 125mm deep into the ground and water frequently but sparsely.
You should typically do this twice a year - once in spring and once in summer.
GET RID OF WEEDS
Even in winter, weeds can take over your garden.
Before spring arrives it's a good idea to pull out any weeds - so they don’t grow further and spread.
According to My Home Turf: "Depending on whether the weed is an annual or perennial will depend on which pre-emergent or post-emergent herbicide you use.
"If you have a problem with annual weeds, such as Crabgrass, then fertilising in spring would go hand-in-hand with the application of pre-emergent herbicides."
GET EDGING
Edging and taking care of your garden's surroundings are very important.
You can use a half-moon edger, garden shears or even a pair of kitchen scissors.
But get rid of any grass that overlaps onto paths or flower beds.
CHECK YOUR LAWNMOWER
Since your garden tools have been tucked away for the winter months - now is the time to get them in tip-top shape.
Make sure they’re your lawnmower is in working order and sharpen your shears.
