TOP Gear presenter Chris Evans is being investigated over historical sex assault allegations, police have confirmed.

The Sun reported on Saturday how the Top Gear star was to be quizzed by police over the allegations, revealed by website Heat Street.

And a Metropolitan Police statement today confirmed Evans, 50, is being investigated about "incidents in Tower Hamlets during the 90s".

It read: "An allegation of non-recent sexual assault was made to police on May 23.

"The allegation was made by a woman against a man, and relates to incidents in Tower Hamlets in the 1990s.

"There have been no arrests and no person has been interviewed under caution."

It was not confirmed if or when Evans will be questioned by investigating officers.

The star sensationally quit Top Gear after ratings plummeted.

Beeb bosses now face a dilemma over whether Evans, 50, will continue on his Radio 2 breakfast show.

A BBC spokeswoman declined to comment while Evans’s representatives were unavailable to comment.

The cop quiz comes after a woman who worked with Evans in the 1990s told The Sun on Sunday earlier this year how the star flashed at her almost every day for two years.

She said he exposed himself to people who did not do what he wanted. She added: “He might have thought what he was doing was amusing, but like a lot of bullies he cloaked it in a joke.

“Bullies make out that you’re not being fun if you’re not being part of that joke.

“I have no idea if he was getting some gratification out of this, but he used to get his penis out every time I saw him.

“He’d either just get it out, or he’d walk into a room naked.

“Sometimes it was erect, sometimes it wasn’t. I know other people experience the same thing at work but this was quite extreme because of the relentlessness of it, almost every day for two years.”

Speaking in May she claimed he grabbed her breasts and bullied her after she rejected his advances.

She claimed her complaints were ignored and the ordeal left her traumatised and on anti-depressants.

And insisted she was speaking out to protect others at risk of being harassed by him.

The woman says she made a statement about Evans to a lawyer five years ago.

And she told of her shock when BBC chiefs signed Evans to front Top Gear, claiming they knew of his past behaviour.

Evans, said to have amassed a £55million fortune, will appear in the BBC2 show’s finale on Sunday night.

He and co-star Matt LeBlanc, who fell out during filming, missed the show’s wrap party in central London’s Soho last week.

BBC are considering the show’s future after viewing figures fell below three million.

Evans’s stint has also been dogged by complaints about his alleged bullying by  ex-colleagues.

They included the husband of Top Gear executive Lisa Clark who quit after  five months  amid claims Evans was a control freak.

Dan McGrath, who worked on the star’s BBC radio show, took to Facebook to blast his “sh***y” behaviour.
Evans has admitted in the past that he would expose himself to staff, calling it “the funniest thing in the world”.

BBC stars found guilty of  sex assault claims in the wake of Jimmy Savile include Rolf Harris, Stuart Hall and Chris Denning.

Pressure grows

CHRIS Evans has been under intense pressure since taking over Top Gear.

After his first show he was slammed by viewers for being “too shouty” and behaving like “an embarrassing dad”.

There have been claims of infighting between Evans and co-host Matt LeBlanc, 48.

Several former colleagues of the DJ have made allegations of bullying.

On Thursday The Sun revealed he had been summoned for crisis talks with BBC bosses after a string of complaints about his behaviour on set.

A social media campaign is calling for a “Chrexit” and a Top Gear referendum.
