SNOW is set to hit parts of Britain tonight as a spell of strong winds and rain sweep in.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for wind across western parts of Wales, northwest England and southwest Scotland from Tuesday afternoon and into the evening.

Another yellow weather warning is in place for rain starting at 3pm today across Northern Ireland and southwest Scotland.

The warning continues into the evening, with bus and train services likely affected and journey times taking longer.

It comes after the Met warned snow could be seen in some areas at higher ground on Tuesday night.

Met Office Chief Meteorologist, Matthew Lehnert, said: “A low pressure system will bring a period of wet and windy weather today and tomorrow.

"Thick cloud and heavy rain will continue to push in from west bringing 50 to 60 mph winds along western coasts. Snow is likely to fall over parts of upland Scotland overnight.

“Some disruption due to strong winds is likely on Wednesday, especially in southern and western areas, as well as the potential for heavy rainfall and even some snow, though the latter probably confined to high ground in the north.

"It will be another cool day with temperatures of 7 to 10 C in the west, with 11 to 13 C possible in the southeast, however it will feel colder in the strong winds.”

Brits have been warned of difficult travel conditions due to rain in Northern Ireland, the north west of England and parts of Scotland.

The Met Office said bus and train services will probably be affected and journey times may take longer.

In addition, there may be spray and flooding on roads affecting journey times.

The wind alert warns strong winds bring the potential for "some disruption", adding: "Some delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport are likely.

"Delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges likely.

"Some short term loss of power and other services is possible.

"It’s also likely some coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities will be affected by spray and large waves.

And two weather alerts are in place for tomorrow, with similar warnings for travel delays.

The Met has issued a yellow wind warning for Wednesday, starting at 6am and lasting until the evening.

Gusts of 40-50 mph are expected in London and South East England, South West England and Wales.

Some coastal areas, especially in parts of south and west Wales and Cornwall, could see gusts above 60-70 mph during Wednesday morning.

Winds will also spread late Wednesday morning into early afternoon across Northern Ireland with gusts of 45-50 mph at times inland and 60 mph along northern coasts.

It will stay unsettled through the rest of the week, with sunshine and heavy showers for many on Thursday, and persistent rain in the south on Friday, the forecaster claimed.

But weather will become drier and brighter as we head through the weekend and more especially next week with temperatures starting to rise.

Overnight, Scotland will see further spells of rain which will turn to snow over the mountains.

Many other areas will be hit with rain or showers which could be heavy in places along with some thunder.

Eastern Scotland will also be hit by gale force winds.
