DEIDRE SAYS: NO one in their right mind thinks bringing up teenagers is easy.

Parents are particularly protective of their daughters and the thought of them having relationships, sex and needing contraception is a big adjustment.

Of course you want to keep your daughter safe and you did your best to ensure she didn’t get pregnant, but your job now is to support her as she makes the best decision for her.

Now is not the time to judge or get angry with her. Take her to the GP to get the support she needs.

Reassure her that whatever she decides you will be there for her. The urge to tell her what is best will be so strong but the decision has to be hers or you’ll be setting her on a long-term path to resenting you.
