MOST of England is now under a Tier 4 lockdown - but what businesses and shops are open in these areas?

Three-quarters of England has been plunged into the highest level of restrictions as a highly infection mutant form of Covid-19 sweeps across the UK.

A further 20million people in parts of England, including the North East and most of the Midlands, are the latest areas to join London and parts of the South East of England in Tier 4.

It means the closure of non-essential retail shops, hairdressers and nail salons, and pubs and restaurants in a bid to stop the spread.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock said: "I know they [Tier 4 lockdown measures] place significant burden on people especially businesses but I'm afraid it is absolutely necessary."

A new strain of the deadly virus now accounts for the majority of new cases which are "doubling fast".

The total number of positive coronavirus tests in Britain has now surpassed 2million.

What non-essential shops are open in Tier 4?

Like in previous lockdowns, all non-essential retail must shut under Tier 4 lockdown restrictions.

This includes shops that primarily sell clothing and homeware goods.

But businesses that are providing an essential service can stay open.

Latest states that this includes:

  • Supermarkets
  • Pharmacies
  • Garden centres and Christmas tree retailers
  • Building merchants and suppliers of building products and off-licences
  • Market stalls selling essential retail
  • Businesses providing repair services but only if they primarily offer repair services
  • Petrol stations
  • Automatic (but not manual) car washes
  • Vehicle repair and MOT services
  • Bicycle shops
  • Taxi and vehicle hire businesses
  • Banks and building societies
  • Post offices
  • Short-term loan providers and money transfer businesses
  • Funeral directors
  • Laundrettes and dry cleaners
  • Medical and dental services
  • Vets and pet shops
  • Animal rescue centres, boarding facilities, and animal groomers
  • Agricultural supplies shops
  • Mobility and disability support shops
  • Storage and distribution facilities
  • Car parks
  • Public toilets
  • Motorway service areas
  • Outdoor playgrounds
  • Outdoor gyms, pools, sports courts and facilities
  • Golf courses
  • Archery/driving/shooting ranges (outdoors)
  • Outdoor riding centres

The measures are broadly similar to those in place in November's lockdown.
