The Big Six firm made £1.8billion before tax last year and chief exec Alistair Phillips-Davies gets £2.92million a year.

But one customer service worker said: “They’re trying to make us scrape every penny from our customers. It’s embarrassing.

“We make a fortune and yet they are asking us to save £2million this year for no reason other than greed.”

Staff at SSE’s offices in Portsmouth, Cardiff, Glasgow and Perth were told to save the cash. The firm said it encourages staff to treat all customers fairly and “offer goodwill payments that properly reflect the nature of the complaint”.
