Slots were made available at the North London stadium on an appointment or walk-in basis in a huge inoculation push.

Queues formed bright and early this morning, snaking right the way round the club's home this afternoon.

Also in the stadium was an event aimed at increasing blood donations to aid the treatment of sickle cell disease, particularly among the Black community.

The officials Spurs Twitter account praised the "incredible turnout".

Vaccinations were opened up to all adults on Friday, edging Britain closer to the July 19 "freedom day".

People in England made a whopping 1,008,472 appointments through the national booking service across Friday and Saturday.

That is equivalent to more than 21,000 an hour - or six every second.

And NHS England said this does not include appointments made through local GP-led vaccination services, or people getting jabbed at walk-in centres.

Everyone aged 18 and over is being urged to arrange a jab if they have not yet had one, as the health service enters the final push to protect the country against the virus, and rapidly spreading variants.

Public Health England said there has been a 79 per cent rise in one week in cases of the Delta variant, first identified in India, with the increase being driven by younger age groups.

On Saturday, thousands of jabs were administered after stadiums and football grounds in London were transformed into mass vaccination centres.

Giant jab clinics were set up at the Olympic Stadium, Stamford Bridge, Tottenham Hotspur FC, Charlton Athletic FC, Selhurst Park and Crystal Palace Athletics Centre.

There were also pop up clinics at universities, such as in York and Canterbury.

The bookings surge came at the end of a week which had already seen almost 1.8 million appointments made in just three days, after the NHS vaccination programme opened up to people in their early twenties.

Some 692,299 appointments were made on Tuesday when 23 and 24-year-olds became eligible for a jab, with another 635,478 booked on Wednesday when the programme was extended to those aged 21 and 22.

There were another 456,366 appointments made on Thursday, meaning more than 2.5 million appointments were booked in just four days since booking opened to under-25s on Tuesday.

NHS chief executive Sir Simon Stevens said: "This pandemic has been a challenge for everyone but the various restrictions have hit young people particularly hard.

"That's why it's good news that Covid vaccinations are now open to all adults across the country, and already well over three million people in their twenties have now had their first jab.

"So if you're 18 and over and haven't yet had yours, now's the time. It's the single easiest way to protect yourself, keep friends and family safe, and hopefully give us all our summer freedoms back.

'RACE TO THE FINISH LINE'

"Please encourage your friends and loved ones to do the same, as we're now in the race to the finish line.

"The more of us who are vaccinated, the safer we all are, and the sooner freedom can return."

He added: "The NHS Covid-19 vaccination programme is gathering momentum as the finishing line comes into sight.

"It is fantastic to see so many young people coming forward to do their bit in the battle against the virus, protecting themselves, their friends and their family - over 3.5 million people under the age of 30 have already had a first dose."

Health Secretary Matt Hancock said: "It's incredible to see the enthusiasm young people are showing for vaccination across the country, and it is a testament to the fantastic work of the team in keeping as many people safe from Covid-19 as possible.

"If you've yet to book your appointment, I urge you not to hesitate in getting your jab and securing this protection for yourself and your loved ones."

More than 80 per cent of UK adults have had at least one dose of the vaccine, and the Government wants to close the gap to 100 per cent by July 19 - the date earmarked for the full lifting of lockdown restrictions.

Three in five have had both doses, according to NHS England figures.

Dr Susan Hopkins said on Sunday she hoped all over-40s could get their vaccine before July 19 as they are now being contacted to bring forward their second jab in line with update guidance from experts
