Work has started on the UK’s first TRIPLE decker roundabout to help drivers, cyclists and pedestrians
But will it beat congestion or just send everybody round the bend?

ROAD workers have started building Britain's latest triple-decker roundabout – and it's enough to drive anybody round the bend.
The £75m roundabout will see the A19 lowered underneath the A1058 Coast Road in Tyneside to beat traffic jams.
It's hoped is the roundabout will reduce congestion going into and out of the Tyne Tunnel.
At the moment there are often long queues along the A19 as drivers have to queue on the existing roundabout even if they want to drive straight on.
The new roundabout will see drivers wanting to drive straight on, able to do so using a new bit of road that will run underneath.
The roundabout is part of the government’s £15 billion road investment programme.
The initiative is designed to help inject economic growth in the North East of the country.

The junction, used by thousands of people every day, is on the main route to and from the Tyne Tunnel and will mean that drivers travelling along the A19 will no longer have to queue at the roundabout to go straight on.
Instead they will be able to use a new section of road which will run under the existing junction.
The improvements, which are part of the Government’s five-year £15bn roads investment programme, are designed to support economic growth in the North East as part of the Northern Powerhouse initiative.
The job also involves building two bridges to carry the roundabout traffic across the lowered A19, a replacement bridge to support the A1058 Coast Road across the junction, new slip roads to provide access to the junction to and from the lowered A19, and two footbridges across the A1058 for pedestrians and cyclists.
Work is due to start in the summer and is scheduled to last for at least two years. A two-day public exhibition has been organised so that people can find out more about the scheme.
Julie Alexander, Highways England project manager, said: “Once complete, this scheme will improve journey times on the A19 by reducing congestion and improving safety for the thousands of drivers that use this junction each day as well as cyclists and pedestrians.
“The A19 is a vital strategic link providing access to the Tyne Tunnel Trading Estate, Silverlink Retail Park, Cobalt Business Park and South East Northumberland. During construction we will do everything we can to keep disruption to a minimum and ensure that traffic does keep moving.
“I encourage anyone interested in finding out more about the work and how it may affect them to attend the public exhibition.”
