WIKILEAKS founder Julian Assange has promised to release a tranche of documents that could destroy Hillary Clinton's bid to become US President.

The holed-up hacker -- who has been stuck in the Ecuadorian embassy in London for five years -- has said a "significant" release of papers will take place "related to the US electoral process".

His organisation is celebrating its tenth anniversary with a stream of what it claims will be hugely important leaks over the next ten weeks.

A press conference in Berlin at which Assange spoke via video link revealed archives related to the US State Department and its activity during the Arab Spring would be among those put into the public eye.

Journalist Sarah Harrison, a prominent figure at WikiLeaks, said the "powers that be" would carry out a brutal spin war with the organisation in an attempt to discredit it.

And chillingly, Assange called on supporters to form "an army" to defend it against its critics.

Responding to questions at the conference today, Harrison denied WikiLeaks had become a mouthpiece for the Kremlin by publishing secret cables that have damaged Western governments.

She said the organisation had published 650,000 documents relating to Russia and 2.3 million emails relating to Syrian dictator and ally of Russia Bashar al-Assad, reports.

And answering criticism that its leaks could severely hamper US presidential contender Hillary Clinton to the benefit of Donald Trump, the organisation said it only acts on the information it receives.

"WikiLeaks provides a safe means for whistleblowers to make disclosures to the public on wrongdoing committed by any government or private enterprise", it said.

"If we have significant confidential information on Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton we will publish it.

"If we have information on any significant power faction or candidate in a globally significant election campaign, we publish it."

Harrison even alleged that Hillary Clinton considered "droning" Assange to keep him from revealing sensitive secrets.

Australia-born Assange told German newspaper Der Speigel at the weekend that the imminent US presidential election wouldn't hamper his efforts to leak information.

"We're not going to start censoring our publications because there is a US election", he said.

Assange had initially planned to give today's speech from a balcony at the Ecuadorian embassy, which awarded him asylum in 2011 as he faced extradition to Sweden to face rape charges.

Assange says that if he is moved to Sweden he could be forced to travel to the US where he may be tried for espionage.
