Who is Kim Dotcom and what’s his net worth? Internet pirate and hacker – here’s what we know

The millionaire Megaupload founder is never far from the media spotlight

INFAMOUS internet mogul Kim Dotcom is in the spotlight once again, as he claims Hillary Clinton's emails will soon be published.

The millionaire Megaupload founder said the unpublished material will put her in "serious trouble" as rumours circulate that Wikileaks could release 33,000 of the ‘missing’ emails.

Controversial Dotcom is wanted in the US on copyright infringement and money-laundering charges.

Who is Kim Dotcom?

Born as Kim Schmitz in West Germany, the 42-year-old is now dubbed one of the world's "largest tech entrepreneurs".

He was a troubled child growing up, and started hacking from an early age.

At just 18 years old he claimed that he had bypassed Nasa, the Pentagon and Citibank security systems, and had hacked hundreds of private branch exchange systems belonging to US companies before selling the access codes.

He was arrested two years later in 1994 for trafficking in stolen phone-calling card numbers.

Dotcom was later convicted of 11 counts of computer fraud and 10 of data espionage and given a two-year suspended sentence because he was underage when the crimes were committed.

While living in Hong Kong, he set up Megaupload - an online storage warehouse which is used globally by millions of people to store and access copies of TV shows, feature films, songs, porn, and software.

At its most popular the site had more than 50 million users per day - and became the 13th most visited website on the internet.

But in 2012 it was shut down by the US government shut after being accused of internet piracy.

It was claimed Dotcom had cost film studios and record companies more than $500million by encouraging users to store and share copyrighted material.

He says he actively tried to stop copyright infringement.

Criminal cases were brought against him, so he moved to New Zealand and said Megaupload would be registered from there under the domain name mega.co.nz.

He changed his surname to Dotcom in 2005, in tribute to the stock market bubble that made him a millionaire.

How did he become a millionaire?

In 2000, Dotcom launched a security company called Data Protect but later changed the name to Megaupload.

Anyone could register to have an account with Megaupload, where they could host both their own legitimate files, as well as pirated movie and music content, which could then be shared with people on forums and file-sharing websites.

It has 180 million registered users, earning Dotcom more than $40 million just in 2011 alone.

This is where he really made his millions.

In January 2013, Dotcom launched another cloud storage service called Mega.

Three years later, Mega announced that the service has 35 million registered users that have uploaded 12 billion files.

How much is Kim Dotcom’s net worth?

As of this year, the entrepreneur's net worth is $200 million.

He's believed to have made $175million dollars with his file sharing website Megaupload

Where is Kim Dotcom now?

After moving to New Zealand in 2009, Dotcom leased a mansion and a helicopter, and bought 12 cars for $3.2m so he would be granted permission to stay there.

Three years later, himself and three others were arrested by New Zealand police officers working with the carrying machine guns and attack dogs.

Dotcom's Megaupload stands accused of costing copyright holders over £320m in lost revenue.

Assets worth $17million were seized during the raid including eighteen luxury cars,  giant screen TVs and works of art. His bank accounts were frozen with $175million now out of reach.

He is still fighting the charges, which include criminal copyright infringement, money laundering, wire fraud and racketeering.

The FBI and the US Justice Department want Dotcom to be extradited to the US to stand trial.

He could face 55 years in prison if Dotcom convicted. All his assets would be handed over to pay for the alleged $500 million in damages to the entertainment industry.

But for now, the internet mogul continues to live in his £15million mansion with his wife and five children in Auckland.

He has released his own music and founded the Internet Party to break into New Zealand politics.
