I’m sorry I wasn’t there to protect you, writes grieving James Bulger’s dad in open letter to murdered son

THE heartbroken dad of James Bulger disclosed an open letter to his son yesterday — the 30th anniversary of his murder.
Ralph Bulger, 56, tells of his deep love for the fun-loving two-year-old, and regret he could not save him.
He has spent three decades trying to protect other kids from killers Jon Venables and Robert Thompson.
The pair, then ten, snatched James in Bootle, Merseyside, and left his tortured body on a rail line.
Thompson is now free and Venables is seeking parole.
In his letter, Ralph says: “I can’t believe it’s been 30 years since I last saw your beautiful face. The years have sped by yet there have been days when the pain of your loss has felt like a wretched eternity.

“I’m so sorry I wasn’t there to protect you. I’m sorry I didn’t save you from the terror. Most of all, I’m sorry you never had a chance to grow up and have your own life.”
He adds: “I hope you know how loved you were. Your joy was my joy. When they stole you from me . . . the world became a very dark place.
“I thought I had you forever, but I was wrong. I couldn’t save you, but I can try to protect other children like you.”
