A NEW 'mannequin challenge' video has infuriated animal rights campaigners because it features water park staff clutching DOLPHINS by the tail.

Workers and visitors at the Blue Lagoon Island's Dolphin Encounter in the Bahamas have joined in the viral trend, which sees people uploading videos of themselves looking as though they've been frozen in time like a shop dummy.

But the video features the trainers grasping the magnificent creature's by the tail as they pose motionless.

But animal rights campaigner Ric O'Barry, founder of the Dolphin Project and star of the 2009 film'The Cove', said ordering the trained mammals to stay still is not natural.

He told The Dodo: "The dolphins in this video are performing an unnatural trained behaviour called 'stationing.

"The dolphins do this for a food reward. All of the dolphin trainers in the video are simply participating in cheesy publicity stunt, at the dolphins' expense."

In June Elisa Allen, Director, PETA UK told The Sun online that water parks like Blue Lagoon are "hell on earth" for the animals they imprison.

“Dolphins are a hugely intelligent and social species, and forcing them to spend decades performing stupid tricks and swimming with tourists in tiny chlorinated tanks causes them intense misery, stress, and loneliness."

O'Barry added: "The best thing the general public can do (if they really want to help dolphins) is to ignore the 'Captive Dolphin Mannequin Challenge' and stop buying tickets to dolphin shows."

What is the Mannequin Challenge?

HE Mannequin Challenge has become the “latest craze” to sweep the internet with Hillary Clinton, Destiny’s Child and even professional sportsmen joining in.

The Mannequin Challenge is a new online trend which sees people uploading videos of them looking as though they've been frozen in time.

Teenagers from the USA started off the viral movement last month. The camera swoops around the people taking part and the videos have become increasingly elaborate since the trend has grown in popularity.

Once the clip has been recorded, social media users are sharing the footage with the hashtag #MannequinChallenge.

Stars of the big screen have become the latest group to join in on the Mannequin Challenge while they were visiting the White House.

Robert De Niro, Miley Cyrus, Ellen DeGeneres and Tracee Ellis Ross, the daughter of Diana Ross, were all in attendance to receive Presidential Medals of Freedom from President Barack Obama.

England striker Jamie Vardy celebrated breaking a 14-game goal drought by doing a one-man version of the challenge in front of his delighted teammates.
