President-elect Donald Trump says he is looking forward to meeting PM Theresa May for the first time in the spring

Number 10 announced on Friday that the PM would travel to Washington to visit Mr Trump following preparatory meetings between both Governments.

The Prime Minister’s joint chiefs of staff Nick Timothy and Fiona Hill travelled to the US last month to build links with Mr Trump’s team.

The visit was part of Mrs May’s efforts to build a relationship with the controversial tycoon.

Mr Trump tweeted: "I look very much forward to meeting Prime Minister Theresa May in Washington in the Spring. Britain, a longtime U.S. ally, is very special!"

Of the meeting, a source said: "This was part of a process leading towards the PM's first visit with President-elect Trump.

"During the second phone call with president-elect Trump, the Prime Minister suggested it would be a good idea for key staff from both teams to meet.

"President-elect Trump agreed this would be useful.

"We are pleased to have been able to make that happen and the Prime Minister looks forward to visiting the new president in the spring."

Though a meeting has been confirmed the PM has still not managed to nail down a date, according to Bloomberg.

The confirmation of the meeting comes after it emerged that Nigel Farage will attend Trump's inauguration.

Farage, who campaigned for Trump, has said he would like to act as a bridge between the UK and the new US administration.

He met with the President-elect just days after the election and posed outside the gold plated elevator in Trump Towers.

And Trump even sent a tweet suggesting that Farage would do "a great job" as the British Ambassador to the United States.

However Number 10 has dismissed all suggestions that the Ukip leader might become a middle-man between the two governments.

President-elect Trump will be inaugurated on January 20.
