A MUM was left terrified for a decade after a stranger with a rose revealed he had been secretly following her for a year.
Lorraine Mitchell, 52, was approached as she sat in her car in 2007 and endured 10 years of harassment before her stalker was finally jailed this year.
Telling ITV's Lorraine about how her ordeal began she said: "I had just finished work and I was sat in my car ready to drive home and he approached the car.
"I just thought he wanted directions and he asked me to go out with him and I said 'no I'm not interested'.
"Then he persisted and said 'please, please give me a chance' and I said 'no I'm not interested I need to get home'.
"Then he offered me a rose, a red rose, saying 'please, please', still insisting and I said 'no, there's no way'.
"I wanted to get away as quick as possible because there was something about him that did not feel normal and then he said 'please give me a chance, I know everything about you, I have been watching you for a year'."
Concerned Lorraine asked the man what he knew about her and discovered he had her address and her children's names as well as details of her divorce and love life.
Plans for new stalking laws to be introduced in the UK
The mum said she has never been able to find out how Sherzad Salih, 38, discovered these details.
He then spent 10 years begging Lorraine to go out with him, stopping her outside work, inundating her with Facebook messages after she joined in 2009, and sitting in his car outside her home.
Lorraine said she was left in fear for her life after "he would not take no for an answer".
A court heard that he had also let down the tyres of her car and chased her in his car as she drove.
Salih has been jailed for four years and the mum of Hastings said she finally feels that she can get her life back.
Lorraine said she had changed the way she dressed during her decade of hell and not wanted to go out, but now she is planning a trip to London with pals and feels like her old self.
