JEREMY Corbyn says Labour will vote down Theresa May’s Chequers deal so they can push for another election and get into power.

But he ruled out the possibility of holding a second vote on EU membership, saying they “are not proposing another referendum”.

The leftie leader echoed his shadow Foreign Secretary Emily Thornberry, who said the opposition party will block any Brexit deal from getting through Parliament so they can oust the PM from Downing Street.

Mrs May is currently struggling to get her plans agreed to by the other EU countries, and faces an even tougher job to get MPs to approve the deal she brings back from Brussels.

Mr Corbyn told the BBC: "Our preference is a general election - let the people decide what direction they want to go.

“We've made it very clear; we understand and respect the results of the referendum."

In another interview today Mr Corbyn's aide cut off the reporter asking him about a plot to censure the Labour MP Rosie Duffield for criticising him.

She revealed she had contemplated quitting Parliament after facing a motion blasting her for attending a demonstration in Westminster against anti-Semitism in March.

The motion was eventually withdrawn but she said “you have to ask yourself if positives outweigh negatives, and whether it is worth the effect it is having on my family”.

Asked about it by BBC South East’s Helen Catt the leader’s head of strategic communications said: “Sorry, can we stop this.”

Mr Corbyn also effectively ruled out another vote on Brexit if Labour then wins power, asked if he is in Number 10 would we still exit the EU he added: "The referendum made that decision."

The veteran leftie said: "We are not proposing another referendum -I understand many people are but there are also many versions of what that referendum would be which could be actually more complicated."

Last week Ms Thornberry said they will oppose it to try to force an election by Christmas.

She said a deal which meets her party’s tests was “not going to happen”, and therefore the Prime Minister would be forced to quit.

And Ms Thornberry made the threat explicit, saying: “I can't see them coming back with a deal that is going to meet our six tests and I can't see them coming back with a deal that will unite the Tory party, for Heaven's sake.”

The Islington South MP, and the current bookies' favourite to eventually replace Mr Corbyn, said the only way to break the impasse would be to hold another general election.

Ms Thornberry added: “They are not capable of governing. We're either going to have a general election in the autumn or we're going to have it in the spring.”
