SPECIAL 50p coins celebrating Brexit have been produced with the wrong date on them.

Several of the prototypes of the coin have been minted with the March 29 date inscribed on the bottom – even though MPs voted to delay Brexit.

The blunder is a major embarrassment for the Treasury.

But Chancellor Philip Hammond shrugged it off yesterday – saying the botched coins would become a collector’s item.

Quizzed on the coins, he told the BBC’s Andrew Marr Show he admitted he did not know if the coins had been struck.

He dismissed suggestions they should be melted down, saying: “Or they will become collectors’ pieces.

“They were never meant to be circulating coins, they were always collectors coin of which the Royal Mint issues quite a number.”

Labour MP Mary Creagh said: “The Brexit 50p coin has fallen victim to the Government’s Brexit chaos.

“Is this what the Chancellor means by taking back control of our money?”

Treasury sources confirmed that a handful of coins have been produced with the wrong date on them.

But they insisted the right date would be on the final product – whenever Britain leaves the EU.

Collectors who have already ordered the coin could face a long delay in getting them as they will only be sent out after Britain exits the EU.
