Home hero Van Gerwen took to social media to announce that he will not participate as he has split with wife Daphne.
Elsewhere, defending champion Josh Rock starts his title defense with a tough test against Ricardo Pietreckzo and Luke Humphries also begins his campaign in the second round today.
But teenage sensation Luke Littler is not in action in the Netherlands as the Nuke has opted to take the weekend off ahead of what promises to be a hectic summer.

Trebles for show, doubles for dough
Joe Cullen had a real horror show of a performance in the Netherlands.
It all seemed to start well when he began hitting big scores.
However, his finishing was not up to scratch and missing doubles cost him dearly.
Ryan Meikle took advantage to beat him 6-1 and book a clash with Ryan Searle tomorrow.

SuperChin makes hard work of it
Daryl Gurney scraped through against Maik Kuivenhoven.
It seemed as though the Dutchman was going to stage a comeback but the Irishman did just enough to prevent that.
While his finishing was up to the levels we expect from him, he took out double 4 and you could see the relief that the job was done.
