Horse racing tips: Newmarket and York – Templegate’s betting preview for TODAY’S ITV racing
Newmarket and York come under the spotlight as Templegate gives you his best bets for the day
FOLLOW the Alpha female in the Falmouth Stakes.
ALPHA CENTAURI was the star of Royal Ascot for me when bolting up in the Coronation Stakes. With the mile division lacking top quality Jessica Harrington’s ace filly could be the one to step up to the mark. She will be hard to beat.
1.50 NEWMARKET: Uncover the Truth in the consolation race for the Bunbury Cup.
TRUTH OR DARE is nicely weighted on his best form. He was touched off at Doncaster in May before finding race tactics against him at Goodwood.
Last month’s York effort was too bad to be true and I’m expecting to be ridden more prominently today.
War Glory is paying for his consistency. He should run his race again but he’s been beaten plenty of times in similar races it’s hard to get excited about his chance.
The surprisingly small field won’t do Gallipoli much good. He won an 18-runner handicap at Leicester last season and he probably needs them to go hard up front.

2.25 NEWMARKET: Tuck into the Main course in the Duchess Of Cambridge Stakes.
MAIN EDITION saw off La Pelosa, Angel’s Hideaway and Pretty Pollyanna to win the Albany at Royal Ascot. It was a strange race as they went very fast on the far side where fourth-placed Angel’s Hideaway raced.
Main Edition led the pack on the stands’ side and they couldn’t get by her. If she gets to the front she must have a great chance of extending her unbeaten run to four.
Gossamer Wings couldn’t have gone much closer to winning the Queen Mary at Ascot. That’s usually a stronger race than the Albany but I’m not convinced this year. She also has to prove she’s as good over today’s extra furlong.
2.40 YORK: It’s time to Muk about.
MUKHAYYAM notched up his second course-and-distance success when nosing out Framley Garth two weeks ago. He got a good ride that day but it looks likely that he’ll get his own way out in front again.
He went off way too fast when only fifth behind Mister Belvedere and Pacify in the Queen Mother’s Cup for lady amateurs.
The front two came from way back and those tactics won’t be a help today.
Manjaam – another track winner – has stronger claims. He showed a good turn of pace to win here in May and he had a poor draw at Royal Ascot.

3.00 NEWMARKET: Put a Ring around the Bet365 Handicap.
BERINGER travelled like a class horse but he just couldn’t get past Wissahickon in a hot York contest last time.
He looks sure to get a decent pace to aim at again and today’s track might just suit him better.
Wissahickon showed a great attitude that day and he must have a fine chance again. I’m just not sure he can hold off Beringer this time.
Mark Johnston has a fine record in this race but his pair Communique and Poet’s Prince were miles behind Beringer and Wissahickon at York.
Zaaki is a much bigger danger. He came from much further back than ideal when third behind Hunting Horn in the Group 3 Hampton Court Stakes at Royal Ascot. Top weight might not be enough to stop him.

3.15 YORK: There’s a Pretty good bet in the Summer Stakes.
PRETTY BABY has looked all class this season. She barely broke sweat to land a Redcar novice race before comfortably landing a Nottingham Listed contest.
This is just the type of progressive sprinter that needs following and it’s hard to imagine she’s not up to this Group 3 level.
Could It Be Love has some serious form in the book. Her second behind top-class Alpha Centauri in the Irish 1000 Guineas could not have worked out better and she went on to finish third in the Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot.
She’s got plenty of pace so the drop to 6f shouldn’t be a problem.
Raven’s Lady could be best of the older fillies but the will do well to stop the three-year-olds dominating.
3.35 NEWMARKET: It’s hard to see past ALPHA CENTAURI in the Tattersalls Falmouth Stakes.
She had Threading and Clemmie behind when a most impressive winner of the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot.
The devastating way she stormed home by six lengths makes a reversal of that form unlikely.
She’s probably the best miler of any sex and any age in Europe so she should have little trouble taking this.
Nyaleti’s German win was probably not much of an improvement on her Goodwood Listed success in May. Nothing she’s done suggests she’s up to this level.
Opal Tiara is the one I like at decent odds. She beat Hydrangea at the Curragh last time and she’s well at home on quick ground.
