Some gamers might have been left confused by the name of this year's Call of Duty.

Named Modern Warfare 3, this is not the first time that title has been used in the franchise.

In fact, in 2011 the original Modern Warfare 3 released on PS3, Xbox 360 and PC.

Zombies mode is this year's biggest addition

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 was first designed as an add-on for MW2 and thus is very similar to last year's offering.

The highlight is probably a new Zombies Mode, similar to what the Black Ops games offer.

The game's multiplayer maps also include several old offerings, updated with modern graphics.

Following last year's impressive offering, fans had big expectations for Modern Warfare 3.

Unfortunately, things aren't looking good as both fans and critics alike have slammed Activision's latest game.

Xbox Live down on Call of Duty release day

Gamers wait all year for the release of the next Call of Duty but today has been full of hiccups.

Xbox Live was hit with an outage this morning, leaving gamers unable to play the new entry.

The issue affected the UK and Germany, Microsoft said.

'Worst campaign in franchise history'

Gamers are NOT happy with Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3's single-player campaign.

Taking to X/Twitter, players raged about its short length, poor writing and generic missions.

One fan said: "Call Of Duty MW III Campaign is the worst writing and campaign I’ve ever seen in the COD franchise.

"Like the worst bar none. It’s an embarrassment and the writers should be ashamed. It absolutely deserves the poor review scores."

Call of Duty fans 'review bomb' new entry

Fans have taken to online platforms Metacritic and Steam to "review bomb" the latest Call of Duty game.

Review bombing is when, as a form of protest, fans give the game a bad score online without having played the game.

This is in an attempt to discourage people from buying the product and show developers they are unhappy.

Fans divided on release day

Call of Duty fans are divided as Modern Warfare 3 releases globally.

Some fans have branded it the "worst COD in history" while others have called it "amazing."

However, it's safe to say the single-player campaign is not up to scratch, with publication IGN, among many others, slamming it as "rushed."

Game delay

PlayStation previously announced that it had 12 games in the works, but now half of those have been delayed.

While many were eagerly awaiting a number of these games, it seems that PlayStation is off target.

PlayStation released bundle with free gift

Sony released a new PS5 bundle to tempt gamers - and one retailer has thrown in a free gift too.

The gaming giant has cut the cost of the console in recent months with a number of bargain prices popping up.

Fans had the opportunity to purchase the console alongside the new MW3 game with a free bucket hat.

Fans review the game

Hundreds of fans who rushed to play the new release this morning have shared their thoughts online.

Taking to X, one wrote: "Nothing more than a DLC. Sad gamers were taken advantage of this year."

A second said: "I really like the zombies, it runs like butt sometimes but all in all 7.5/10."

However, many are pleased with the game with one saying: "Amazing game to play."

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 review

Call of Duty is all about bombastic battles and explosive set pieces, as you rush from cover to cover and missiles drop in your wake.

However, in Modern Warfare 3 the stakes have never been lower, and the heart of the series is nowhere to be found.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has launched on every modern platform, both current and last gen, outside of Nintendo.

This means it is available on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PS4, PS5, and PC.

How will Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 improve on MW 2?

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 was originally planned to be DLC for MW2 and as such not include a lot of improvements.

The highlight is a new Zombies Mode where your team will fight against an incoming horde of zombies.

Some classic multiplayer maps will also be making a comeback, alongside general updates.

What is the new game about?

The single-player campaign is out now!

The campaign is about Captain Price and his company taking down the terrorist Makarov.

It has been heavily criticised for its short length, recycling of old ideas, and grinding-based missions.
