DOODLING FOR THE DADS

Google Doodle celebrates Father’s Day 2019 today with a three-part animation of a family of ducks

FATHER'S Day 2019 is here, and dads across the land will be relishing being spoiled rotten by their kids.

And Google has got in on the act with their own special celebration of all things paternal – here's what you need to know.

What is the Father's Day 2019 Google Doodle?

Google is marking Father's Day 2019 with a commemorative Doodle.

The heartwarming design features six ducklings chirping around their dad, with one peeking from the top of his head.

The three-part animation then shows the little birdies diving under water to the despair of their dad, who suddenly can't find them.

While the third adorable graphic shows the father blowing bubbles of water around each of the six ducklings before they plop under the water.

It's not the first time Google has taken the opportunity to commemorate Father's Day.

Last year, they marked the occasion with six painted hand-prints that became a multicoloured herd of diplodocus dinosaurs matching the Google logo.

Which countries celebrate Father’s Day today?

The likes of Canada, the UK and the United States all celebrate Father’s Day on the third Sunday of June, this year falling on June 16.

However, many other countries have the day on a completely different date.

Instead, Australia, Fiji, Papua New Guinea and New Zealand celebrate their dads in September.

Many people believe that the celebration date is different in the southern hemisphere because June is their autumn, rather than their spring, when the day can be marketed better.

And in Italy, Switzerland, Spain, Portugal and Croatia it’s in March, while in Bulgaria it’s on the same day as Boxing Day, December 26.

For Norway, Sweden, Finland, Estonia and Iceland, Father’s Day celebrations are held on the second Sunday of November.

What is a Google Doodle?

In 1998, the search engine founders Larry and Sergey drew a stick figure behind the second 'o' of Google as a message to that they were out of office at the Burning Man festival and with that, Google Doodles were born.

The company decided that they should decorate the logo to mark cultural moments and it soon became clear that users really enjoyed the change to the Google homepage.

In that same year, a turkey was added to Thanksgiving and two pumpkins appeared as the 'o's for Halloween the following year.

Now, there is a full team of doodlers, illustrators, graphic designers, animators and classically trained artists who help create what you see on those days.

Among the Doodles published in past months were designs commemorating German scientist Robert Koch, Jan Ingenhousz (who discovered photosynthesis) and the 50th anniversary of kids coding languages being introduced.

And the search giant celebrated the 2017 Autumn Equinox , which marked the official ending of summer and the coming of autumn.
