‘About as funny as a colonoscopy’: Twitter outrage as Mrs Brown’s Boys is voted the nation’s favourite sitcom of the 21st century
Comedy fans in shock over the poll which saw the show beat The Office and Gavin and Stacey
TWITTER has gone into meltdown after Mrs Brown’s Boys was voted the nation’s favourite sitcom of the 21st century.
The BBC show, written by and starring Irish comedian Brendan O’Carroll, came top of a poll conducted by the Radio Times.
The show was panned by critics and was dubbed the “worst comedy ever made” but yet managed to beat Ricky Gervais’s critically-acclaimed The Office and the award-winning Gavin and Stacey.
Many took to Twitter to share their outrage as one wrote: “Gavin and Stacey, The Inbetweeners, Phoenix Nights. All considered not as good as Mrs Brown's Boys - A show about as funny as a colonoscopy.”
Another wrote, “Mrs Brown's Boys has been voted best sitcom of the century? That's the first time it has actually made me laugh,” while another added: “Mrs Brown's Boys voted best sitcom of the 21st century. Democracy has failed.”
Another outraged user added: “Mrs Brown's Boys winning best sitcom of the century... The end of the world needs to happen pretty bloody quickly...”
One Tweeter said, “Use a potato peeler on my eyeballs or watch Mrs Brown's Boys, *heads towards kitchen*,” while another stated: “When your future grandkids ask "How did you let this happen?" they're referring to when Mrs Brown's Boys got voted sitcom of the century.”
But O’Carroll, who has written three series of the show as well as a feature films, Mrs Brown’s Boys D’Movie, said despite the bad reviews, the vote proved the show’s popularity.
He said: “It vindicates the fans’ belief in the show. They have kept us on the air – it certainly wasn’t the reviewers.

In the poll, The Office came second, Peter Kay’s Car Share third, The IT Crowd fifth, The Thick of It sixth, Gavin and Stacey seventh with Peep Show at number 11.
